A photograph of British Army soldiers, possibly Royal Engineers, building a makeshift pontoon bridge out of barrels across the River Liffey. The card is notated "Liffey at Athgarvan - Charleton Curragh Newbridge and Kildare". The white coloured uniforms canvas fatigue suits (as in 2-part uniform) were issued as personal clothing but to “rank and file” only (i.e. ranks of corporal (2-stripes) and below. They were not issued to sergeants (including lance sergeants) and above. They were commonly used for all dirty jobs, like coal fatigue, cookhouse fatigue and mattress filling fatigue, but also for training where gun and rifle oil was used in quantity, such as at the schools of musketry and artillery during courses of instruction and maintenance. Closely associated with the regular army they are often seen during the first two years of the war, but less so after 1916. The clothing appeared in the scales of issue in the soldier’s “clothing regulations”.en_IE
