Slide 22: one of a collection of lantern slides shown at Clondalkin branch library c 1910. Description given in booklet: The part of the Kedron which flows between the city and the Mount of Olives and called the Valley of Jehoshaphat is believed, not only by Moslems but by Jews, to be locality where the Last Judgement will take place. The valley has been used as a Jewish burial-ground from time immemorial, and there exists a strong desire among the Jews to be buried in that place. The belief that the Last Judgement is to take place there is founded on the saying in Joel: ‘I will gather all nations and bring them into the Valley of Jehoshaphat…Let the heathen be wakened and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat, for there will I sit in judge all heathen round about.’ The prominent tomb in the distance tradition asserts to be Absalom’s pillar, which the rebellious son ‘reared up for himself during his lifetime in the king’s dale’ but it evidently belongs to a much later period. This pillar lies close beside the tombs show in the next view.en_IE
