Slide 46: one of a collection of lantern slides shown at Clondalkin branch library c 1910. Description given in booklet: Shortly after leaving Jerusalem the scenery becomes wild and desolate, and in course of time we come to the Convent of Mar Saba, in the Wilderness of Engedi. It stands on the edge of the gorge of the Kedron, near its entrance into the Dead Sea. This gorge is here from 1000 to 1200 feet deep and the rocky sides are almost precipitous. Looked at from beneath, part of the Convent buildings are seen to be literally clamped to the perpendicular walls of rock, and hang perilously over the abyss. Other portions of the edifice are constructed in chambers cut out of the mountain side. The land side of the monastery is enclosed by a wall of great thickness, through the massive gateway of which no one is admitted unless vouched for by the Greek Patriarch at Jerusalem. The buildings occupy the site of the “laura” or anchorite's cell, inhabited by St. Saba, a noted monk of the fifth century.en_IE
