Description: | The Stowe Missal originally considered to have been written c.800 is a Latin mass-book of the early Irish Church, carried by a priest when travelling. It was said to have been written in Tallaght, Co. Dublin, as St Maelruain, the abbot of Tallaght priory is commemorated in the Missal, though the Royal Irish Academy asserts that recent research suggests it may have been written in the monastery of St Ruadhan in Lorrha, Co. Tipperary, c. 1050. The ‘Stowe’ prefix arose because the Missal was once part of a collection of manuscripts in the library of Stowe House, Buckinghamshire in England. It was purchased by the British Government and deposited with the Royal Irish Academy in 1883 where it remains. |
