dc.descriptionSouth Dublin Village Walks - Tallaght Stop 03: Luas stop and Belgard Square. The walk begins at the Luas terminus. The Luas Red Line runs between Tallaght and The Point in Dublin’s Docklands. The service commenced in September 2004 and has proved to be a great success, both in Tallaght and elsewhere in Dublin. This terminus is located on the line of the Old Blessington Road, previously the route of the Dublin to Blessington steam tramway. The steam tram began running to Blessington in 1888 and was extended to Poulaphouca in 1895. However, it ceased operations at the end of 1932. Looking from the Luas terminus, you should be able to see a landmark building from recent development in Tallaght, the tower of Belgard Square. Built on the site of Virginia House, a 19th century farmhouse, it is one of the urban town centre developments designed and built (both in Tallaght and elsewhere) during the early- to mid- 2000s. The vision driving the development was of a modern town centre with active streets and a resident population. Unfortunately, the property crash of 2008 and subsequent recession halted development and completion of hotel and residential elements of this area, along with the adjoining Tallaght Cross. While many of these elements remain incomplete and unused, this area has huge potential as a town centre in better times to come.en_IE
