South Dublin Village Walks - Tallaght Step 21: Byrne Cottages. These cottages were designed by the architect Thomas Joseph Byrne, one of the most influential architects of his day, who designed some of the best public housing of the period while also overseeing the design for major projects such as Dublin Airport. Byrne’s work had far reaching results in a broad range of aspects of Irish life. These cottages were designed as part of his work for the South Dublin Rural District Council. During a busy career, he also worked for the Local Government Board, the Local Government Department and the Office of Public Works. He was heavily involved in the reconstruction of important public buildings such as the Four Courts and the Customs House after the War of Independence and the Civil War.en_IE
