South Dublin Village Walks - Newcastle Step 8: Motte. A motte is a remnant of an ancient Norman defensive structure which would originally have had a wooden building or buildings on the top of the mound. Surrounding the Motte would have been a Bailey - a type of courtyard, and around this would have been a protective ditch. This Norman structure is thought to be the castle after which Newcastle was named.en_IE
