Items from the personal effects of Fr. John Butler O.F.M. He was appointed a chaplain in the British Army with the rank of Captain, and remained an army chaplain until he was demobilised in 1919. Fr. John spent the majority of the First World War ministering to Catholic soldiers in the Middle East and Palestine as part of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF). From 1917, he witnessed at first hand the various battles in Palestine and around Damascus as the Allies struggled with the Ottoman Turks for control of this strategically important region. Fr. John returned to Ireland in 1919 and spent the following eleven years in the Capuchin Friary on Church Street, Dublin. He died in Cork on 3 October 1950.en_IE
