Shoulder insignia and dog tag worn by Aloysius Leo Joseph Callender, London Irish Rifles, who died of wounds in Ypres on the 8th of April 1917 aged 26. These insignia were removed before the trench raid near Hill 60 in which he died - the London Irish war diaries contain the order "Each man will write his name and number on a piece of paper and carry it in his right breast pocket otherwise no printed or written matter will be carried. No regimental buttons or badges of any sort will be worn". These items would therefore have been returned to his next-of-kin after his death. He is buried in Bedford House Cemetery.en_IE
