Description: | French postcard showing the toppled Blessed Virgin statue atop the basilica in Albert, France. The statue was hit by German artillery on the 17th of January 1915. A superstition grew up that the war would end only when the statue finally fell. In 1918, the Germans advanced into Albert during their Spring Offensive. The British, fearing the tower could be used as a vantage point by snipers, used artillery to topple the statue and what remained of the steeple. |
