Slide 3: one of a collection of lantern slides shown at Clondalkin branch library c 1910. Description given in booklet: Continuing we come in a fertile but unpeopled valley to some wonderful architectural remains of the old "Jewish monarchy, the Pools of Solomon. They are partly excavated in the bed of the limestone rock, and partly constructed of massive blocks of masonry, and cover altogether about seven acres. These Pools, about six miles out of Jerusalem, form part of the water system, devised by Solomon to supply the city. The water is conveyed to the city in underground conduits. Near them is the spring, from time immemorial called the "sealed fountain," and this is probably alluded to in Canticles IV. 12, when the holy spouse is likened to a "spring shut up-a fountain sealed." According to tradition, King Solomon shut up this spring, and sealed the door with his signet, to the end that he might preserve the water, for his own drinking, in its natural freshness and purity.en_IE
