dc.description | Slide 7: one of a collection of lantern slides shown at Clondalkin branch library c 1910. Description given in booklet: Toiling along, we approach a square, white-washed building surmounted by a dome. Except for its greater size it differs in no respect from the ordinary tombs of Moslem saints so numerous throughout Egypt and Syria. It is the birthplace of Benjamin, and the tomb of Rachel. The present edifice is modern, but the identity of the site is undoubted. It has been said that the roads in the East never vary, but continue to follow precisely the same course age after age. It will be remembered that, in both the accounts of Rachel’s death, stress is laid upon the fact that she died and was buried “in the way.” The tomb of Rachel still stands by the roadside. | en_IE |
