Cur Síos: | Slide 10: one of a collection of lantern slides shown at Clondalkin branch library c 1910. Description given in booklet: Skirting the base of Mount Zion we come to the Jaffa Gate, immediately inside which is the Tower of Hippicus, or Tower of David. It is a work of Herod the Great, and was spared by Titus when he took the city, in order that after ages might see the prodigious strength of the bulwarks over which his arms had triumphed. It is solid up to a certain height, being composed of enormous blocks of stone, once beautifully white, now black with age. The moat around it is nearly filled in with rubbish. Not much is known definitely about it, and its chief importance is that the historian Josephus makes it the point of departure in laying down the line of the ancient walls of Jerusalem. |
