Description: | Slide : one of a collection of lantern slides shown at Clondalkin branch library c 1910. Description given in booklet: The Golden Gate occupies a conspicuous position in the east wall of the Noble Sanctuary, and is situated about mid-way between St Stephen’s Gate and the south-east corner of the temple enclosure. Viewed from Olivet, the Golden Gate with its projections, double-portals, and lofty masonry overtopping the adjoining battlements, forms the most prominent feature in the corner of the eastern wall. Its ornate character seems to indicate that it was a festal entrance to some sacred or palatial edifice, rather than a fortified gate of the city. Such an entrance is spoken of in Ezekiel, “the gate of the outward sanctuary that looketh towards the east,” and Christ as the Prince of Peace on His way to the temple amid the hosannas of the multitude on Palm Sunday rode through a gate that occupied the site of this one, if not this identical gate. After the crusades the victorious Moslems walled it up, and there exists a tradition that some Friday a Christian conqueror will enter the city by this gate and wrest the Holy City from the Infidels. |
