Slide 40: one of a collection of lantern slides shown at Clondalkin branch library c 1910. Description given in booklet: The Jews for many years were proscribed, and anyone found in Jerusalem was liable to be punished with instant death. Although the rigour of this decree has been abated for many years, the Jews were and still are an abject and down-trodden race, and, with few exceptions, exist in the greatest distress and poverty, chiefly on the alms of their fellow Israelites abroad. Indeed, they, the Jerusalem Jews, as a rule, are not very worthy specimens of this grand old nation; but there are exceptions to every rule, and we have before us a face for many years familiar to every visitor to this city. This old Jew was a seal engraver, and used to visit the convents and hotels to sell his curios. His seals used to be much sought after, and one especially, with a text, much valued by travellers and written in Hebrew characters- “The Lord bless thee and keep thee.”en_IE
