dc.description | Slide 49: one of a collection of lantern slides shown at Clondalkin branch library c 1910. Description given in booklet: Most of the springs in the lower part of the ghor or plain are either brackish or absolutely undrinkable, but there is one at the foot of the mounds that mark the ruins of Jericho that attracts attention from the purity, sweetness, and abundance of its waters. It bears to this day the name of Elisha's fountain, and is the one the historian speaks of as having been healed by the word of Elisha, speaking in the name of the Lord- “So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spake.” We have no precise indication of the scene of our Lord's baptism, yet a balance of probabilities seem to confirm the accuracy of the tradition that it was here. The land round about is magnificently fertile, and there is scarcely a rod unoccupied by some luxuriant growth. At the time when Cleopatra persuaded the infatuated Antony to present it to her as a private possession it must have been a lovely spot. | en_IE |
