Description: White marble memorial tablet in the form of a tomb chest with pillars on a black background. Dedicated to General Sir John Davis K.C.B. incorporating a carved parade dress hat, knobkerry and sword on a shelf, with two dog heads beneath. Between the dogs' heads is a relief of lion on a chapeau and the legend "Auspice Christo"(Under the Guidance of Christ)Dedication reads: THIS TABLET IS ERECTED - BY HIS WIDOW AND CHILDREN. IN EVER DEAR MEMORY OF - GEN SIR JOHN DAVIS K.C.B. - COLONEL OF THE ROYAL SUFFOLK REGIMENT - WHO DIED ON THE 5TH OCTOBER 1901 AGED 69.- HE SERVED FROM 1852 TO 1883 IN THE 35TH 37TH & XX REGIMENTS - AND THE LAST TWO HE COMMANDED FOR 12 YEARS - AND SAW DISTINGUISHED ACTIVE SERVICE IN THE FIELD - DURING THE INDIAN MUTINY 1858-59, THE SOUDAN 1884 & 85 - AT EL TEB & TEMAI - AND FOR THESE SERVICES HE WAS CREATED K.C.B. IN 1898. - HE WAS SECOND SON OF - JOHN DAVIS ESQ - OF THE PARK RATHFARNHAM - II COR. XIII. 14.
