| Description: | Plain white marble memorial tablet with shelf on a black background. Dedicated to Captain William J. Davis of the 60th Rifles, it incorporates a carved officer's rifles busby, crossbelt and sword on a shelf. Beneath is a relief of lion on a chapeau and the legend "Auspice Christo"(Under the Guidance of Christ). Dedication reads: TO THE GLORY OF GOD - AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF CAPTAIN WILLIAM J DAVIS, 60TH RIFLES - ADJUTANT 8TH BATTALION - ELDER SON OF GENERAL SIR JOHN DAVIS K.C.B. - AND GERTRUDE HIS WIFE - HE WAS BORN 13TH JUNE 1882 - KILLED IN ACTION AT HOOGE, NEAR YPRES - 31ST JULY 1915 - AND IS BURIED IN THE HOOGE CEMETERY - "BLESSED ARE THE PURE IN HEART, FOR THEY SHALL SEE GOD" Note: The battle at Hooge in July 1915 was the first occasion in which flamethrowers were used in combat |
