dc.description | Daniel Brady was a native of Rathcoole, born on the 28th of April 1894 to Peter Brady and Mary Brady (formerly McDermott). He was baptised in Saggart RC church. His father is listed in the census of 1901 as being a general labourer, however Daniel Brady’s birth record states his father’s occupation as “Army Pensioner”. The 1911 Census showed his father deceased, and his 49 year old widow supporting the family as a rag cutter in a paper mill. The family lived in “The Green, Rathcoole” nearby the pub now known as the Poitin Stil. Given the area they lived, the paper mill is likely to have been Swiftbrook Mill in nearby Saggart. Daniel joined the 1st Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers in 1916 and was promoted to Lance Corporal. Some months later, the regiment was involved in the Battle of Langemarck which took place from the 16th to the 18th of August 1917 as part of the bigger Battle of Passchendaele. Daniel was killed in action on the last day of the battle and his body was never recovered. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial alongside some 35,000 officers and men whose graves are unknown. | en_IE |
