Ralph Christopher Mulligan was bom in Tinnahinch Co. Wicklow on the 8th of August 1897, the son of John Robert Mulligan an RIC Constable, and Kate Mulligan (Nee Martin). The family, four boys and two girls, moved from Co. Wicklow to Clondalkin where the 1901 Census return shows Ralph’s father, John Robert Mulligan, in employment as a sexton living in Church Terrace. He was presumably attached to nearby St. John’s Church. Ralph Christopher stopped using his first name around this time, and enlisted in the Irish Guards around May 1916. The Irish Guards recruited widely from RIC families. In August 1917, Christopher Mulligan landed in France and later fought at the Battles of Pilckem, the Menin Road and Loos. In Early October 1917, the Guards were in action between the villages of Poelcapelle and Langemarck. Pte. Mulligan was killed at the battle of Poelcapelle on the 8th of October 1917, and was buried in Artillery Wood cemetery, Belgium. His brother Henry William, ten years his senior, survived the war having served in the South Irish Horse from November 1915 until his discharge from the army in April 1919. Ralph Christopher Mulligan and his brother are commemorated in St. John’s Church in Clondalkin.en_IE
