| dc.description | Richard Rodgers was born in Rathfarnham on the 21st of December 1896, the son of Richard and Regina Rodgers who hailed from Co. Down. They were a Presbyterian family who owned a medium-sized dairy farm in Rathfamham called Acre Brook. By 1901 they had eight children ranging in age from 20 years old down to 2. Richard Rodgers joined the Leinster Regiment, transferring to the Machine Gun Corps as part of the 16th Irish Division, landing in France on the 17th of December 1915. He saw action at the Battle of the Somme at Guillemont and Ginchy. The Division moved to Belgium where Richard died of wounds on the 31st July 1917. Death from wounds implies a lapse of time between the injury and the death of the soldier, therefore it is likely that he was severely wounded late in the Battle of Messines. Richard Rodgers lived within 100 yards of Joseph Redmond in Rathfarnham, and they died within 40 days of each other. | en_IE |
