Richard Robert Rumgay was bom on the 21st of November 1896 in Drumcashel, Castlebellingham Co. Louth to Robert and Dora Rumgay. His father was of Scottish descent and was a gardener by trade. They moved to Dublin and resided firstly in 18 Mount Merrion Avenue in Blackrock, later moving to No. 4 Main Street, Clondalkin. It was from there that Richard left to join the East Kent Regiment in May 1916. He survived the 4 months slaughter of the Somme, was in action at Carnoy and later saw action at Trones Wood, Thiepval and Albert. April 1917 saw the regiment in training. In July 1917 they arrived into Belgium in preparation for the third Battle of Ypres. This battle was similar in nature to the Somme the previous year with mud and bad weather causing severe difficulties to all of the combatants. By the 7th of October the weather had seriously deteriorated with torrential rain and worsening ground conditions. Richard Rumgay was killed in action on the 11th of October 1917 in the early stages of the attack on the village of Poelcapelle. His body was never found and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot memorial.en_IE
