dc.description | Thomas McCann was born in Rathfarnham, Dublin in 1881. He enlisted in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers on the 12th of June 1901 and was in the regimental depot until 1st February 1902, when he joined the 1st Battalion of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He served in the Boer War before going to Malta then Egypt twice and India. He passed a siege ballooning course in Malta on 8th March 1904 and his third class certificate of education on 14th November 1905. He extended his service to complete 12 years on the 13th January 1909. Thomas was discharged on the 11th June 1913 in Gosport, England, with the rank of Private, his trade was given as Labourer and his special qualifications for civil life was working as a Groom as he was able to ride and drive. His intended residence on discharge was Willbrook, Rathfamham. At the outbreak of war, Thomas McCann was recalled to serve in the Army again. He again served with the 1st Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He attained the rank of Sergeant and married 17 year old Margaret Mary Dunne in Galway on 22nd June 1917. He returned to Belgium afterwards and saw action in the early actions of 3rd Ypres. He was wounded in the neck and was shipped back to Birmingham’s 2nd War Memorial Hospital where he died of an arterial aneurysm. He had only been married for two months. His body was repatriated to Ireland and he is buried in Cornamagh Cemetery in County Westmeath. | en_IE |
