dc.description | William Carroll was born in Lucan on the 16th of January 1873, the son of Edward Carroll and Ellen (Nee McDonnell). His brothers and sisters were machinehands and burlers (fabric finishers) in a Woollen Mills. Most likely Hill’s Mills in Lucan. He had moved out of the family home aged 28 in 1901, later emigrating to England, and soon after joined the Royal Garrison Artillery in Great Yarmouth. The Royal Garrison Artillery (RGA) was an arm of the Royal Artillery that was originally tasked with protecting British Empire's forts and fortresses. They had the largest guns and howitzers, mounted on railways or on fixed concrete emplacements William Carroll is recorded in the UK 1911 Census as a resident of the RGA Barracks HQ. He was married there, to an Anne Cracknell, in late in 1911 and had a son, Eric, in 1913. He landed in France on the 22nd of February 1916 with the 56th Siege Battery of the Royal Garrison Artillery and saw action during the Battle of the Somme which lasted from July to November 1916. He later joined the 19th Siege Battery and was killed in action on the last day of the Battle for Passchendaele when the village was finally taken. William Carroll is buried in Cement House Cemetery, Belgium, and is also commemorated on the Great Yarmouth War Memorial in St George's Park, Great Yarmouth. | en_IE |
