Description: This thesis explores the geology, resources and social history of Kippure Mountain. The formation of Kippure’s granite and turf enabled the mountain to become part of Ireland’s natural, built and cultural heritage. The granite was vital for building the roads which gave access to the mountain. The harvested turf supplied both the domestic and the commercial needs of Dubliners during a memorable time in Irish history. Kippure became a mountain of national interest when it was chosen as the site for Ireland’s first television transmitter.
