The letter on the verso is the final page of a letter discussing the genealogy of the Scott family, the origin of words in the Scott family motto, and a Captain Scott. The letter of the recto of the following page is addressed to "My dear Hopton" with the address partially obscured by stamp edgings. It discusses the loan of a book on pedigrees and mentions visiting Ballygannon [Kilcoole, Co. Wicklow] to determine genealogical details. The handwritten text in the notebook as a whole contains various ink-pen entries from a number of hands, covering the origin of the Scott family, the genealogy and heraldry associated with the family, along with some genealogical notes and questions, and letters in full on the same subjects.
