dc.descriptionIrish Aviator Captain J. P. "Paddy" Saul went to sea at the age of fifteen and acquired a merchant marine Masters Certificate of Competency. He joined the Royal Flying Corps in 1917. He was the navigator for one stage of Charles Kingsford Smith’s year long round the world circumnavigation flight in a Fokker F.VIIb/3m Trimotor monoplane named the Southern Cross in 1928/29. He was subsequently involved with the establishment of Irish Air Traffic Control and his contribution to Irish aviation was acknowledged by his appearance on an Irish postage stamp in the series 1998-04 Irish Aviation Pioneers.en_IE
