American aviator Douglas 'Wrong Way' Corrigan (1907 – 1995) earned his unusual appellation following an unauthorized flight from Brooklyn New York to Baldonnel Airdrome on 18th July 1938 after a 28-hour flight. He had been denied permission to make a nonstop flight from New York to Ireland and though his claimed 'navigational error' was considered intentional, he never admitted to flying to Ireland deliberately.en_IE
