Teideal: | Six Men Saving Hay at Three Castles Co. Wicklow |
Údair: | Unknown Cruise, Aidan |
Eochairfhocail: | six men saving hay using a hay sweep Lugnadon, Blackrock near to Three Castles Mick Healy, Mick Carroll (Blackrock), Ted Broe, Jimmy Hamilton, Johnny Hamilton and Pat (Sol) Hanlon |
Dáta Eisithe: | 1935 |
Cur Síos: | This photograph shows six men saving hay using a hay sweep (not a tumbler) at Lugnadon, Blackrock near to Three Castles, Co. Wicklow in a field the lower part of which is now underwater forming part of the Blessington Lakes. Further information courtesy of Martin O'Hara: Looking at the photo. I knew two of the men, Jimmy and Johnny Hamilton ( brothers ) Johnny with the hay sweep* ( Hay Sweep I saw in use but never knew what it was called ) *nearest the camera and Jimmy is wearing a hat and a tie in the background facing the camera. Jimmy was my farming neighbour. Jimmy Hamilton died in 1988, and his grandson is my farming neighbour now. Another man ( I know ) mentioned is Ted Broe who is now another farming neighbour, if the photo was taken circa 1935 then Ted Broe would be new born, Ted is on the other hay machine and must be circa 16 to 18 years of age. I believe the photo was taken in Three Castles on Jimmy Hamilton’s farm. If you look at the right hand bush and the bush next to it on the left, between them there is an ESB pole clearly visible which can only mean that the photo was taken in the early 1950’s after rural electrification occurred and more than 12 years after the lake was flooded. Most of the dates I have mentioned are general. Lugnagun is part of Blackrock and doesn’t quite come down as far as the lake. It is on the east side of the lake. Three Castles is on the west side of the lake. Lugnagun may have been misspelled as Lugnadon but I’m open to correction on that. Lugnagun as far as I know means The Hollow Of The Hound. It is obvious that the photo was taken in the early to mid 1950’s. Mick Healy is sadly deceased. Ted Broe is still healthy and actively farming. |
