Cur Síos: First World War Iron Cross Second Class. The Iron Cross was instituted on 10 March 1813 by King Frederick William III of Prussia during the Napoleonic War. The Iron Cross was redesigned for issue during Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 and again by Kaiser Wilhelm II on 5 August 1914 for use during the First World War. The medal was awarded to recognise acts of bravery and leadership. The medal was not worn in combat, but the ribbon was looped through the second buttonhole of the jacket to identify a recipient of the award.
