He was the younger surviving son of Colonel Henry F Finlay, D.L., of Corkagh, Clondalkin, County Dublin. He joined the 5th Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers in June, 1913, and was attached to the 1st Battalion Royal Irish Rifles on March 18th, 1915.en_IE
