Cur Síos: The Belgian Croix de Guerre (or War Cross) was instituted by King Albert I, King of the Belgians, on 25 October 1915 to recognise acts of heroism performed by individuals of any of the Allied powers. The medal was also awarded for three years of front-line Belgian service. It could also be earned by foreign nationals for acts of heroism conducted while on Belgian soil. The design is of a bronze cross with crown, crossed swords and a disc bearing a rampant lion. The reverse of the medal bears King Albert I's cypher - a stylised letter 'A', and this example also has a bronze palm on the ribbon, again with King Albert's cypher. This indicates a mention in despatches for gallant or meritorious action in the face of the enemy.
