Description: First World War Iron Cross First Class. The Iron Cross was instituted on 10 March 1813 by King Frederick William III of Prussia during the Napoleonic War. The Iron Cross was redesigned for issue during Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 and again by Kaiser Wilhelm II on 5 August 1914 for use during the First World War. To be awarded the Iron Cross First Class, a soldier must have previously been awarded the 2nd class medal. It was worn on the left breast pocket.
