The Iron Cross was redesigned for issue during Franco-Prussian War of 1870-71 and again by Kaiser Wilhelm II on 5 August 1914 for use during the First World War. To be awarded the Iron Cross First Class, a soldier must have previously been awarded the 2nd class medal. It was worn on the left breast pocket.
