Cur Síos: Slide : one of a collection of lantern slides shown at Clondalkin branch library c 1910. Description given in booklet: Having seen a few of the principal things of note connected with its previous history, it may be interesting to have a few scenes of present-day life in Jerusalem thrown on the screen before leaving. Under the present rulers, whose time seems to be principally employed in the way we propose to call “Turkish Delight,” modern Jerusalem offers no inducement to strangers to settle down in it although it is now connected by rail with Jaffa. Amusements, there are none; promenades or streets, where the inhabitants might stroll with comfort, there are none; commerce and manufactures do not exist; shops, except in the shape of booths and stalls, there are likewise none; schools and educational institutions cannot live in it, municipal government there is none, and what little there is of imperial does not do much good. In sanitary, lighting, and water arrangements, according to western ideas, it is in its infancy, and its climate is not so good as in many other parts of the Holy Land, and yet in spite of all these drawbacks, the population is increasing year by year, much to the disgust of the ruling power, who place many obstacles in the way of settlers and do what they can to harass and annoy them; but these new-corners are chiefly members of sects who come to end their days in the Holy City, and do not care for the ways or manners or conveniences of modern life, and who indeed would rather be without them than have them.
