Cur Síos: | Slide 69: one of a collection of lantern slides shown at Clondalkin branch library c 1910. Description given in booklet: The prophecy ‘Woe unto thee Bethsaida’ has indeed been fulfilled. At Bethsaida the houses are built of mud on a framework of reeds. They are more squalid than any along the coast, and the fishermen use the quay for drying and mending their nets. With all its dreariness it is a picturesque scene, but its interest to us, as in many of the ruins of this land lies in it having been the scene of Christ’s personal labours on this earth. Josephus, in speaking generally of the region of Galilee, praises the soil and the temper of the air. “During the ten months of the year the markets are laden with the fruit of the land.” Then the inhabitants were industrious and prosperous: to-day, Moslem rule blasts all growth. |
