Cur Síos: Slide 77: one of a collection of lantern slides shown at Clondalkin branch library c 1910. Description given in booklet: It has been generally understood that houses of Damascus are more sumptuous than those of any other city in the East. Every rich man’s house stands detached from its neighbours, at the side of a garden, and it is from this cause that the city (severely menaced by prophecy) has hitherto escaped destruction. One side of any room intended for noon-day retirement is generally laid open to a quadrangle, and in the centre of this is the dancing jet of a fountain.
