Description given in booklet: Damascus often referred to in Biblical history is now the largest city in Syria, and occupies a site of striking beauty at the foot of the eastern base of the Anti-Libanus. It has a large trade and some manufactures, and its cutlery has a world-wide reputation. Seen from a distance, the town, surrounded by houses, and embowered in trees, has a charming effect, but the expectations thus raised are not realised by a nearer view. The city proper is about six miles in circumference, and is partly surrounded by old tumbledown walls – some of them mere mud patches. The principal buildings are places of worship, and of these the chief is the ‘Great Mosque’ the longest ecclesiastical building in the world, formerly a heathen temple, then a Christian church, and now a Mohammedan mosque. The floors are tessellated marble, covered in Persian carpets, and the walls and piers of the transept are enriched with beautiful devices formed of various coloured marbles, while rows of noble Corinthian pillars divide the interior into nave and aisles.
