Cur Síos: Whitechurch Parish’s Great War Memorial Window. It was produced c. 1920 by Joshua Clarke and Sons, Dublin, and is inscribed J. Clarke. Joshua Clarke was the father of the artist Harry Clarke. The window commemorates six men with connections to Whitechurch who died in the Great War, though not all of themen were born or reared in the parish. The men are: • Capt. W.J. Davis, King’s Royal Rifles • 2/Lieut. Edmond Farran, Black Watch • Pte. Robert McFadzean, Cameron Highlanders • Lieut. Hastings Grevatt Killingley, Royal Dublin Fusiliers • Pte. G. Baldwin, Tank Corps • 2/Lieut. William Cecil Tosdevin, Northamptonshire Fusiliers The main image is based on the account in Matthew 28:1-2 of the discovery of Jesus’s empty tomb early in the morning of Easter Sunday. A weeping angel stands outside the tomb in front of the two Marys. The angel points upwards while in the background the sun rises over the city of Jerusalem.
