Cur Síos: WWI Records of the Dead show that John Monahan was born in Lucan. Latin baptismal records from Lucan in 1895 show the birth of a “Joannes Monahan” to Petro (Peter) Monahan and Joanna (Jane) Grennon in Primrose Lane, Lucan. He is not recorded in later censuses as living in the Lucan area, and it is not possible to ascertain wherehe spent his early years. He next appears in the records when he joins the Army Service Corps in Bristol. The ASC was a branch of the British army tasked with the provisioning of war materials to the front which was an essential and immense undertaking. His regimental number in the ASC indicates he was in the area known as the Army Remount Section. This area was responsible for the care and supply of horses and mules for the war effort. On the 28th of April 1915, he transferred to the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and in 1917 was in the area of Nieuport near the Belgian coast defending the canals against enemy destruction. On the 28th of September, when the Inniskillings were en route back to their base at Le Panne, they came under attack and one officer and 16 men were killed including Pte Monahan. He is buried in Coxyde cemetery. His will stated that his personal effects were to be sent to his mother, who in 1917 was living in 47 High Street Dublin. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission’s commemoration of him states he is the brother of Bessey (Elizabeth) Monahan of Esker, Lucan. Bessey was born in Somerton, Lucan in 1885.
