Lowe: 2/Royal Irish Regt "B.E.F. 21.7.16 Dear Sir, This hurried note is merely to confirm the very sad news which you will have had direct from the War Office that Lieut. G G Finlay of this Regiment has been killed in action. He was killed in a very gallant manner when holding a portion of a trence which we had previously captured against a very strong enemy counter attack, and all through a very trying time behaved in a most courageous manner and showed a very fine example to his men. His deat was instantaneous and caused by a machine gun bullet through the heart. I cannot tell you sir how deeply we feel his loss and sympathise with you in your bereavement. I remain, Yours Sincerely, Lowe (Capt. & Adjt) Colonel Finlay Corkage [sic] Clondalkin." |
