Cur Síos: | British War Medal 1914-1920 Description: Made of solid silver, the obverse is a coinage head of King George V with the legend “GEORGIVS V BRITT : OMN : ET IND : IMP”. Reverse is St. George on horseback trampling a shield carrying the eagle symbol of Germany. A skull and bones lie on the ground and the sun appears at the top. The dates 1914 and 1918 appear around the edge of the design. The recipient’s name and regimental number is impressed on the edge Ribbon: “Watered effect” ribbon with vertical thin Blue, Black and White stripes, broad Orange, and thin White, Black and Blue stripes. Entitlement: The medal was authorised in 1919, and awarded to eligible service personnel and civilians. Qualification for the award varied slightly according to service. The basic requirement for army personnel and civilians was that they either entered a theatre of war, or rendered approved service overseas between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. Service in Russia in 1919 and 1920 also qualified for the award. |
