Cur Síos: The Memorial Plaque or Death Plaque was given to next-of-kin in memory of those who were killed as a result of service in the First World War. It is 121mm in diameter. Each was cast with the name of the deceased as part of the design. This example is named to Aloysius Leo Joseph Callender who died in Ypres on the 8th of April 1917 aged 26. The design shows a helmeted Britannia with a lion at her feet. She holds a laurel wreath in one hand and a trident by her side. At the bottom can be seen a small image of a lion killing an eagle symbolising the defeat of the Central Powers.
