Description: The .303 Inch calibre SMLE Mk III was introduced on 26 January 1907, and remained in use as the British Army's principal infantry weapon until the end of the Second World War. It also saw service (as a captured weapon)with the IRA in the 1916 Rising and during the War of Independence. They were also used by the Black and Tans and Auxiliaries. The Irish Free State Army inherited them after the British Army left Ireland in 1922. They later saw service in the Irish Army as a re-barrelled 0.22 inch rifle used in indoor firing ranges.
