Cur Síos: | Thomas Stoney was born in Montpelier, Tallaght on the 5th of May 1894, the son of Patrick Stoney and Catherine (Nee Norton). His father died aged 33 in the South Dublin Union in 1897 when Thomas was only three years old. Catherine remarried on the 28th of November 1899, to Edward Quinn of Old Bawn Tallaght. Thomas Stoney joined the 9th Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers and embarked to France, landing at Le Havre on the 19th of December 1915. The 9th Battalion were initially in the Bethune area. In 1916 he was in action on the Somme during the The Battle of Guillemont in which the 9th Battalion captured the village. He later fought in the Battle of Ginchy. 1917 saw Thomas Stoney in action at the Battle of Messines. He was killed in action on the 16th of August 1917 - the first day of the Battle of Langemarck. His body was never recovered and he is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. Members of his family are buried in St. Maelruain’s Churchyard. |
